Much easier to learn how to use 3D engines, such as Unity or Maya.
It's better, in my opinion, to code from scratch, but it will take up much, much more time.
Other than that, good luck with it!
Maya is a 3D design program, not an engine.

Also, using Unity's a bit like using Game Maker IMO... and I don't like that.

...I thought Unity's a lot more indepth. Like... a LOT.
It's been used to make a crapton of notable games. Their showcase is quite pretty.
