iPad Technical Constaints

Games for version 1 of the ROBLOX iPad/iPhone app should follow these guidelines:

* Don't use Terrain. We haven't gotten it working well on iPad yet.
* All games are for 6-8 players.
* Fewer blocks are better. Budget < 15k non-moving blocks and < 200 moving blocks, otherwise performance will suffer.
* Some decals are ok, but the iPad 1 only has 256MB of RAM - don't fill it up with textures.
* Adapting controls is going to be the most difficult part of this exercise - the goal is for new players to easily be able to pick up your game and play it in a natural way. This will be more challenging for some types of games than it is for others.

I will add to this list as I remind/find out what our other limitations are.

how would we exactly do controls? is there a new object that let's us track the finger when it's touched against the screen?

I agree with mat sort of... if I understand correctly what he is asking... gesture detection would be really neat... it's not a necessity though. I will definitely need to work on the jittery nature of my first person paintball gun / arms... but I know mat has that under control with Borderline.  8)

What about particle effects? Smoke/fire/sparkles/explosions. Should we avoid using these, or are these okay?

Does the app feature a built-in keyboard?
You could make your own, customized one if not. Don't need full keyboard if you only use 4 hotkeys.

Temple Run Ideas:

- New name: 'ROBLOX Run' - Possibly?
 
- Completely Generated Map:
  • Adds a new track with a random orientation/rotation to a table
  • If there aren't any in front, it generates a new track
  • Every 15 or so minutes, once nobody is running, it erases the current track memory(table) to clear up server memory usage (Basically recycling memory)
  • Maybe forever lasting track generation, as in no winner zone? If a winner zone, a certain distance traveled?
  • If no winner zone - furthest distance/most coins/gold saved using data persistence for a top score leaderboard?

I was originally thinking of making the tracks local, although, according to Shedletsky, they're trying to avoid the use of them. Any suggestions/ideas?

Do any of these ideas intersect/cross with the constraints?

Don't think it would make sense wouldn't the person already have temple run on it?

Hey Shedletsky, you know iv'e recently been having trouble with the marbles and everything, and everything we try is kind of getting out of hand now, so would i be able to invite MarioStar6464 to spec ops to help me? he's a brilliant scripter and will be able to make the marbles how you described them to me, making marble ride storm be a blast for ipad, Thanks.
