Laptop Help
« on: May 10, 2013, 01:53:39 pm »

My friend is getting a laptop and he needs help, the price he is willing to spend is 600-700. He wants it for "school work" and he also wants to play Skyrim and source games.

He saw this one and he is wondering if it's good.

What he needs is a dedicated GPU, that laptop has an integrated GPU which are horrible at anything gaming related.

I suggest these laptops if he wants to play Skyrim on it as well. Keep in mind that he won't be able to play at highest settings with good frame rates on any laptop in that price range.  Make sure he's fine with playing at medium settings at around 30+ FPS.

From most recommended to least recommended:

I recommend the first and second one the most. All of them have dedicated GPU's. The third one is good too but I'm not a fan of Acer's build quality.

Add $200 and take this
http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/pd?oc=fncwn24&model_id=inspiron-17r-se-7720

Qosmio's are waaaaay better. My opinion.
Then find one with a quad and GT 650 or better for under $950

They have waaaaay better build quality to go for that cheap.

You're getting GTX 670M for 50 dollars more and a nice i7.

This is the base model.

But no HD screen, and that I what you're going to use the most out of everything.

That's an upgrade.

Like I said, base model and they've got way more features to start with.

The guy doesn't need a hardcore laptop anyways, the Dell or the Qosmio.

Choose one of those. The ASUS has the most graphics power, second the Lenovo and then the Dell.

All are great laptops and you'll get the most battery life out of the Dell and ASUS and is estimated around 5 hours and 30 minutes according to various reviews.

The Dell also has some nice features like Bluetooth 4.0, Skullcandy speakers, 3 USB 3.0 ports (pretty good at this price), and 6 gigs of DDR3-1600 RAM, and a card reader that supports lots of different card types. My second most recommended one.

The Lenovo has a battery life estimated at up to 5 hours. It has better graphics than the Dell, a bit less features though compared to it, but it's also 50 dollars cheaper. You've got one USB 3.0 and two 2 USB 2.0, 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM, and a simple SD card reader. Probably my least recommended of the three, but also the cheapest.

The ASUS gives you an estimated 5 hours and 30 minutes of battery life (thanks to its larger battery) and packs a quad core and good graphics, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0, a card reader, the largest screen of the three, and probably the most balanced of the three. My most recommended one.

The Dell and Lenovo's are thin laptops, can't say the same about the ASUS however. Comes down to personal choice at this point.
