Honestly, Minecraft Should have a better way with servers. Its too hard, plus lags Alot...

Good guide. As a longtime server hoster, I'd like to add that Spigot is an excellent alternative to Bukkit. It runs Bukkit plugins and all, it's just faster and more lightweight. It also performs exceptionally well on servers where you have to pay for CPU usage, since it uses almost 0% CPU when it's idle (no people playing). http://www.spigotmc.org/
